Homes for the people

When it was built in 1923 the Curtin’s house was comparable with plans used by the Workers’ Homes Board of Western Australia, and with the house that featured in this pamphlet produced for the 1943 federal election campaign. Their modest home reflected the Curtins’ enduring socialist values and sense of identification with Australian workers. Records of the Australian Labor Party, Battye Library, State Library of Western Australia MN3001719A/17.6, JCPML00365/39The Curtin government established the Department of Post-War Reconstruction in 1942 and began negotiations for the first Commonwealth State Housing Bill during 1945. These tasks were essential in shaping a fair and economically stable Australia which could provide satisfactory housing conditions for its people.

Late in December 1942, as the danger of Japanese invasion receded, John Curtin shared a vision for every home in Australia, which would have ‘... the amenities of telephone, radio, electricity’s comforts and labour-savers in the kitchen’,[43]  the kind of home he and Elsie might have enjoyed in post-war Cottesloe.
